DC2 Phase II Expansion

DC2 is a build-out of a Tier IV mission critical data center. The original facility was constructed in 2006, with enough space for future buildouts as the client’s expansion needs dictated. This data floor expansion began in January 2011, with a fully commissioned completion date of June 2011.

Harris worked with one of the largest data center builders in North America to provide total mechanical construction needs for a confidential client; with the general contractor providing the major pieces of mechanical equipment to Harris for installation into a fully functional 24/7, 365-day operational data center. Through coordination between team members, construction activities were carried out to ensure that the facilities operational use was not impacted. The build-out added air handling units, chilled water piping, computer room air handler (CRAH) units, fresh-air make-up and exhaust air, a Liebert XDP refrigerant cooling system and components, expanded fuel-oil piping system and added mechanical components for a newly installed emergency generator. Harris provided 3-D/CAD/BIM coordination and fabrication drawings for HVAC, plumbing and piping.

These drawings allowed Harris to fabricate the material off-site at our LEED Silver fabrication facility in Zumbrota, Minnesota. All prefabricated materials were shipped to the site in a “just-in-time” manner. This allowed Harris to comply with the owner’s site security concerns regarding scheduling deliveries and storage constraints.
