BIM/VDC

Harris takes building information modeling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) beyond geometric data and clash detection, putting it to work to generate collaboration, innovation and cost savings. Whether our role is design-build, design-assist or plan and spec, we see BIM/VDC as the critical link between design and execution.

Informed Decisions

3-D modeling gives all the trades the information they need to objectively evaluate plans, so together we can identify issues and resolve them early in the process. Using BIM/VDC-based data, we can make recommendations that improve building performance. By modeling the impact of solar heat on a building’s exterior walls and windows, for example, we can model the HVAC system airflow to determine the optimal air supply and return locations. This enables us to supply the ideal air temperature for providing maximum occupant comfort and improving HVAC system efficiency.

3-D Modeling in Action

During preconstruction and the design-assist phase of a project, we use BIM/VDC to validate concepts and designs, and to guide decisions on budget and logistics. During the construction phase, we apply BIM/VDC to site management, using the technology to:

  • Plan installations
  • Respond quickly to design or structural issues
  • Develop creative, cost-effective solutions
  • Link BIM 360 to objects and time-reporting data to manage productivity, progress and budgets
  • Link quality inspection records to BIM documentation

Offsite Applications

Harris also uses BIM for manufacturing and assembly of building components, including carrier groups, multi-trades racks, heat exchanger skids, pump skids and duct riser assemblies. By linking BIM data to Trimble positioning field software and equipment, we can position and verify the location of inserts and anchors in the building structure, locate equipment connections in plant rooms and prefabricate piping and ductwork.

Software Expertise

We believe in using the best tool for the job. To do that, the Harris team has developed expertise in multiple software platforms:

  • AutoBIM/VDC Mechanical
  • Autodesk BIM 360
  • Navisworks
  • Revit
  • SolidWorks
